This Can’t Possibly Work

Marcia steps inside Dare’s office just a minute past five to find him pulling on his wool overcoat. Accentuating his shoulders and his trim waist, it fits him like it was made for him—and after seeing the dwarves’ handiness with needle and thread putting together Hippolyta's dress—it probably was. He’s picture perfect.

His eyes sparkle when he asks her, “Ready for our night of dinner and theater?” and then he grins mischievously. The theater is A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream at the kids’ school, dinner is at a taco joint where the food is decidedly top notch, and the atmosphere is decidedly not. It is not a romantic date but Dare seems happy enough. Just like he’d been happy to help her cook for the dwarves all day when they’d come over for a “sewing” party. On the outside, he’s the perfect boyfriend for a woman who has three teenage children. Well, except that people still mistake her for his mother.

She plants a smile on her face and he dips in to kiss her cheek, which leaves her with a buzz and disappointment. “Ready as I’ll ever be,” she replies, taking his proffered arm.

They almost leave when Dare’s ancient rotary phone rings. Dare looks toward it sharply. He says nothing aloud, but his lips move, and Marcia can read the name on them. “Penny.”

“Do you need to get that?” Marcia asks gently.

Dare’s attention jerks back to her. “What? No, she—everything is fine. Let’s go.”

Marcia smiles, and at the same time her heart falls.
